However, that last task was frustrating at first because I didn’t really know what tools to use. I Googled around a bit and found some very expensive tools, but I also uncovered a great and useful one hidden away in Mac OS X itself.In the past it would suffice to look at the AirPort symbol in the menu bar top right. If it would show a full signal (all bars black) it would work, and if it didn’t, it wouldn’t. But it seems that the AirPort symbol now always displays a full signal, even when the signal is bad. Fortunately, there is an easy way to check.

PHY Mode: protocol being used to connect.

BSSID: The unique identifier for your airport hardware, also known as the MAC address.

Channel: Wi-Fi signals are transmitting on certain channels. A channel might conflict with other transmitters.

Security: The kind of encryption used. WPA and WPA2 are safe options. WEP isn’t anymore.

RSSI: The ‘Received Signal Strength Indication’ shows the strength of your signal. Closer to 0 is better.

                                  

Transmit Rate: The actual speed at which data is being transmitted between your access point and your computer.

MCS Index: This is a number that corresponds to protocols used to encode the radio signal.

This is already useful. Especially the RSSI and Transmit Rate, which give you an indication of how well your network is performing. But we don’t stop here.

Step 2: At the bottom of that menu is an option called ‘Wireless Diagnostics’. Select it to open an app with the same name, after you’ve authenticated yourself. It opens with an introduction screen which we will ignore for now. Instead, we will press the command key + 2. Or go to the ‘Window’ menu and select the ‘Utilities’ option, as shown on the right here.A window will open with more info about your AirPort network. In the menu bar of that window are 5 options. Select the 5th one called ‘Performance.

Google Chrome and Android SVP Sundar Pichai spoke for the first time about the success of Chromecast, saying the $35 dongle has sold "millions" in the US and that Google wanted to bring it to other countries soon. It’s not surprising, since Chromecast did sell out for weeks on Amazon when it was first released in mid-2013 and continues to the top best-selling item in consumer electronics. It’s easy to forget that Roku had a streaming stick well before Google had Chromecast, but now Roku is back with an updated version of its streaming stick, and it’s out to steal some of Chromecast’s thunder.The original Roku stick was only compatible with TVs that had a Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) port. Now both the new Roku Streaming Stick and the Chromecast connect to any TV through their HDMI dongle hardware, and they both require power from either a USB port or from an outlet via an adaptor. Things start to differ in the initial setup: you have to connect the Roku stick to Wi-Fi or Ethernet and then sign in to your Roku account on your computer to set up the stick. It’s a quick process, but Chromecast requires even less setup   just plug it into the television and install the Chromecast extension to your browser to cast, or use the Chromecast button in one of its compatible apps.

                                     

How you set up each device is directly related to its interface— or lack thereof. You need to link your Roku account to the stick so you can see and access all the apps you’ve downloaded and install more using the included remote. The UI has Roku’s traditional purple framework and functions just like the Roku 3 set-top box: browse through all the apps you have, choose what to watch, and off you go. In contrast, Chromecast doesn’t have a UI at all — or a remote, or anything else. It’s a glorified adaptor that takes minimalism to the extreme. Other than a few settings in the Chrome browser you can change, you’re left to use the button to cast what you’re watching on your computer or mobile device to a TV.

Channels are where Roku shines compared toChromecast: the service has accumulated over 1,200 of the most popular (and the most obscure) video and music channels. There are the usual suspects like Netflix, Amazon, and Pandora as well as unusual offerings like The Yachting Channel and Hypnosis TV, and you can add them all with just a few clicks on the remote. Currently Chromecast has about 14 channels that are compatible with the device, and it’s actually just a feature within existing apps that gives you the option to connect and stream to Chromecast. Searching through the Google Play Store will show you Chromecast-ready apps — Amazon isn’t on there yet, but Google has secured some big providers like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Go. It's also easier to get movies on Roku's stick because it lets you rent and purchase movies directly within its interface; you’ll have to go through Google Play first to get movies for Chromecast.

streaming stick to be from the start: a cheaper, more compatible version of the original stick that presents all the content channels you want and need in an easy, clean experience. It seems to have done that, even without advance browser-streaming capabilities. But even as Roku releases the stick as a Chromecast competitor, we still don’t really know what Google wants its streaming stick to be. Chromecast entered the market as a way to put what’s on your browser onto your TV, but as far as we know Google isn’t rapidly pushing for more partner apps to beef up its entertainment offerings. And similarly to Google Glass, the released SDK gives developers the reins to potentially turn Chromecast into something else — it’s too early to say what that could be, but for now Chromecast has some strong competition in Roku’s streaming stick and we’ll have to wait and see how (and if) Google’s little dongle changes in the future.

US to cede oversight of addresses on internet

United States will give up its role overseeing the system of Web addresses and domain names that form the basic plumbing of the internet, turning it over in 2015 to an international group whose structure and administration will be determined during the next year, government officials said on Friday.Since the dawn of the internet, the United States has been responsible for assigning the numbers that form internet addresses, the .com, .gov and .org labels that correspond to those numbers, and for the vast database that links the two and makes sure internet traffic goes to the right place.The function has been subcontracted since 1998 to the internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, an international nonprofit organization, with the expectation that the United States would eventually step back from its role.But that transition has taken on a new urgency in the past year because of revelations that the US intelligence community, particularly the National Security Agency, has been intercepting internet traffic as part of its global spying efforts.While other countries have called for the United States to turn over the keys to the system, many businesses, dependent on the smooth functioning of the internet for their livelihood, have expressed concern about what form the new organization will take."We don't want to break the internet," said Laura DeNardis, a professor at American University and the author of "The Global War for internet Governance."

                                    



We want to carefully transition to something that doesn't just give the power to one stakeholder, but that takes into account the interests of private industry, of large users of the internet, of the purchasers of domain names, of governments and of civil society," DeNardis said.Lawrence E Strickling, the assistant secretary of commerce for communications and information, said on Friday that the United States will not accept a proposal that replaces it with a government-led or intergovernmental organization.
The Commerce Department also laid out principles that must govern any new body, including maintaining the openness of the internet and maintaining its security and stability.
ICANN will conduct a meeting that will be the first step in the transition process, beginning March 23 in Singapore."We are inviting governments, the private sector, civil society and other internet organizations from the whole world to join us in developing this transition process," said Fadi Chehade, the president and chief executive of ICANN. "All stakeholders deserve a voice in the management and governance of this global resource as equal partners."While the announcements were structured to portray a cooperative global community, there has been widespread hostility toward the United States since the former NSA contractor Edward J Snowden began releasing documents showing the extent of US global spying.

Those spying programs had nothing to do with the role of the United States or ICANN in administering internet addresses. But the perception that the United States was pulling all the strings led to a global uproar.President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil canceled a planned visit to the United States last year and called the activities "an assault on national sovereignty and individual rights" and "incompatible with relations between friendly nations."
Brazil also announced it would host Net Mundial, a global meeting on internet governance, in April in Sao Paulo to discuss the coming transition.But by announcing its plans before the Brazil meeting, "the US is trying to make sure the transition happens on its own terms, and that the US is setting the rules for the transition," said Greg Shatan, a partner at the law firm Reed Smith in New York.With its statement that no government-led organization would take over ICANN, the United States also made clear that the International Telecommunication Union, a United Nations affiliate that oversees global telephone traffic, would not be allowed to take over internet governance. That was an issue last year at an ITU conference in Dubai.
DeNardis said that a key to a new governance structure would be to keep in place the expertise that currently allows the internet to function smoothly.

The company first revealed experimental support for Firefox in "Metro" mode back in October of 2012, and development has continued since then — though a stable version has never shipped.Firefox Vice President Johnathan Nightingale says in a blog post that "we have to pick our battles," and a lack of demand for "Metro" mode support led to the decision. "On any given day we have, for instance, millions of people testing pre-release versions of Firefox desktop, but we’ve never seen more than 1,000 active daily users in the Metro environment," Nightingale reveals. With so few users testing the app, any release would be riddled with bugs and require lots of follow-up work to keep the product up to standards.
